Advance TAFE, with 2 main campuses in Bairnsdale and Sale, is the vocational and tertiary education hub of south-eastern Victoria. It offers a wide range of higher education and vocational programs combining on-campus classes with online and video-conferencing technology.

Advance TAFE wanted to upgrade its storage requirements independently of server virtualisation. The upgrade was crucial due to an organisational re-brand and importantly the upgrade had to be completed within budget with no disruption to its staff and students.

Thomas Duryea Logicalis proposed a scalable storage and server virtualization solution that would minimise disruption and maximise the TAFE’s budget. Using Dell EMC technology, Thomas Duryea Logicalis implemented a centralised SAN storage platform that allowed for simplified future expansion, with an initial storage capacity of 8TB.  This provided an effective and highly available platform for Advance TAFE’s server requirements, supporting numerous institute applications and services.

Thomas Duryea Logicalis’s virtualised solution reduced the need for 23 physical servers down to seven physical hosts for the student management system upgrade alone, and provided a genuinely agile technology environment. Thomas Duryea Logicalis also helped Advance TAFE to achieve efficiencies through SLA rationalisation, training in physical to virtual machine migration and effective use of existing technology. As a result of the project, Advance TAFE was able to utilise two redundant physical servers to host the virtual server farm and leverage its existing investment.
