Logicalis Helps NSW State Records Preserve The Past To
Create Archives of The Future
~ wins Australia’s third digital, next generation
records archive project ~
Sydney, March 15, 2012 – NSW State Records
Department has chosen Logicalis (Australia) to design and implement
the underlying storage architecture for its digital State archives
project. The digital State archives will store, preserve and make
available ‘born digital’ and digitised archival value records of
the government of New South Wales.
The digital archives project is a natural next
step for the State’s archives authority, which already holds a vast
collection of physical archives dating from the First Fleet. These
records will be kept permanently as a vital resource for citizens’
rights and entitlements and historical research.
Logicalis’ custom-built storage, server and
virtualisation solution, based on EMC and Cisco technologies,
adheres to the principles of openness, standardisation and security
needed for digital preservation by archives and libraries.
NSW State Records went to tender for robust,
scalable and efficient asset, specialist services, and technology
solution to be delivered within its new purpose-built data centre
in Sydney, NSW. Critical elements included a primary site and
Disaster Recovery strategy to allow for a frequent, rapid and
high-volume method of data transfer. Logicalis’ proposal around
design, networking and build was chosen on account of its high
level of strategic consultancy, and the project kicked off in
February 2012.
Logicalis’ integrated ICT
solution will be utilised for the development and operation of the
Digital Archive and will utilise the VMware virtualisation platform
and the EMC Isilon storage platform.
Cassie Findlay, Project Manager, Digital
Archives State Records Authority of New South Wales Department of
Finance and Services explained, “it was critical for our chosen
partner to understand the need for openness combined with
future-proofing against the background of legislation and
records-keeping – that’s quite a unique combination of
requirements. We were confident of Logicalis’ ability to deliver
all of these elements while remaining cost-competitive. It’s an
extremely exciting project to work on.”
The project is the third such digital archive
project to run in Australia, following ones at National Archive and
Records Victoria, both completed six years ago. During the two
month project, Logicalis will supply the following;
- Technology: Server Compute, Storage Platform
(Production), Storage Platform (DR), Network, Security, Backup and
Recovery, Configuration, Monitoring and Administration,
Scalability, After Sales Support and Warranty.
- Cisco Nexus multi protocol/ multi-purpose switch, highly
reliable/high
performance ASR Firewall / Router and
next generation C-Series Server Unified Computing
System.
- Isilon X-Series storage system.
- VMware Virtualisation platform.
-
Services: Site
Readiness, Planning and Design, Procurement and Staging, Knowledge
Transfer, Installation, Configuration and Testing, Support Handover
and the Post Implementation Review.
“Working on the most innovative
digital archive project in Australia with the Digital Archives
State Records Authority is extremely exciting for our team as it is
pioneering in records management, particularly given so much has
changed in technology since the last such projects were conducted
six years ago,” said Oliver
Descoeudres, Marketing Director at Logicalis.
“Logicalis’ methodology is based on the
belief that the network, compute and storage platforms are rapidly
converging, and customers need a holistic view and a consolidated
architecture to address their data centre requirements,” he
added.
As well as being a VCE Coalition
partner, Logicalis was the first partner in Australia to be Vblock
certified. In 2011, Logicalis was been recognised by Cisco as
Asia-Pacific “Virtualisation Partner of the Year” and by EMC as
“VCE Partner of the Year”.
